The video summarizes how OneLab is furthering FIRE objectives by making developers of distributed computing solutions and services more effective, by providing federated access to PlanetLab and other private testbed networks, as well as monitoring and measurement services.

The video is also available on the PlanetLab Europe Channel on DailyMotion and on YouTube.

The video was produced by the PlanetLab Europe Dissemination team, (HUJI).

FIREweek 2009
July 2009

The conference “FIRE and Living Labs – Future Internet by the people” was held July 1-2, in Lulea, Sweden. Approximately 300 participants from 27 countries were at the conference.

The FIRE community focuses on Future Internet Research and Experimentation and the Living Labs community with the mission to engage people, users as co-creators in the development of new successful products and services.

During the conference, Mario Compolargo announced the technical requirements for call 5.

Leaders from the north of Sweden were at the conference. July 1st was also the first day of the Sweden holding the European Union presidency.

For more information, see the FIREweek site.

Update to 4.3-rc10
July 2009

Nodes:

  • Rerun initscripts when a slice goes from disabled to enabled.

Interface:

  • Sort "Last Contact" column on node list pages.
  • The interface no longer supports the generic CD or USB image. Systems using the old "CD + floppy" approach should burn a new CD specific to that machine.
  • Node view includes the MAC address and this can be edited.

New Users video
June 2009

A video tutorial explaining how to register with PlanetLab Europe as a new user.

The video is also available on the PlanetLab Europe Channel on DailyMotion and on YouTube.

Everstats in the Public Domain
May 2009

Everstats is now public domain and available.

This site includes an issue tracker and source control system. Feel free to download from here, or to suggest improvements.

Everstats is currently covered by a BSD license.

A monitoring front-end for PlanetLab systems. Everstats is designed to monitor node and slice activity on PlanetLab systems. It retrieves public data from a PlanetLab Central Server (MyPLC) and then polls the slicestats package located on each planetlab node to gather specific performance data. Everstats provides daily aggregate performance data.

Everstats is a Ruby on Rails project using Python for the data collection.

Enable Users video
May 2009

A video tutorial for Principal Investigators is available on How to Enable Users. The short video is a step by step guide to getting new researchers enabled on your PLE site. The video also provides a short overview of some of the Principal Investigator's responsibilities.

The video is also available on the PlanetLab Europe Channel on DailyMotion and on YouTube.

PlanetStats Available
May 2009

PlanetStats, the monitoring site for PlanetLab Europe is now available. PlanetStats monitors user activity on PlanetLab Europe. It creates aggregate data on a daily basis for activity on PlanetLab Europe. PlanetStats provides graphs and reports on PLE activity including information on nodes, slices, CPU usage and in-going and out-going network bandwidth.

Here is a live report showing the top 10 PlanetLab Europe Slices over the past 7 days, ranked by outgoing bandwidth.

OneLab and PlanetLab Europe Briefing Video
May 2009

A new video overview of the OneLab project and PlanetLab Europe is available. Prof Scott Kirkpatrick (HUJI) explains the scope of the OneLab project large-scale distributed network testbed.

The video is also available on the PlanetLab Europe Channel on DailyMotion and on YouTube.

MyPLC version 4.3
April 2009

PlanetLab has released a new version of MyPLC. The new version represents a major upgrade from version 4.2 MyPLC version 4.3 was codeveloped by Princeton and the OneLab project.

Improvements with the upgrade include an entirely reworked user interface and a more flexible data model. The API is not 100% backward compatible but brings new generic features for handling heterogeneous types of resources like nodes and interfaces.

Version 4.3 is a convergence version that takes advantage of these new features to provide convergence between the two different flavours of 4.2 that were running on PLC and PLE respectively, especially in terms of supporting wireless nodes and dummynet boxes for emulation.

The builds are available for public usage. A detailed changelog is also available.

Everstats Service
April 2009

The Everstats service is up and running again. The package collects slicestat data from PLE nodes and maintains it in aggregate form in a local database.

The Everstats system is live and public.

PlanetLab Europe Video Tutorial
Generating an SSH Key for PC/Windows, April 2009

A new video tutorial is available. This tutorial covers the general issues about SSH Keys and PlanetLab. It is geared for PC/Windows users. There is also a tutorial for MAC/UNIX users available.

PlanetLab Everywhere-Brazil
Rio de Janeiro, April 2009

The OneLab project will participate in the workshop "PlanetLab Everywhere - Brazil: A blueprint for disruptive technologies" on April 20th 2009 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

This workshop will explore several new directions to expand the use of PlanetLab as a whole, in addition to providing an overview of its current status.

Whether as a research tool, as a means to fight digital divide or as a mechanism to monitor and manage large and geographically disperse networks, PlanetLab has the potential of reaching "everywhere". Please join us to explore these topics in a daylong workshop organized into four roundtable discussion sessions lead by representatives from both Brazilian and international institutions.

For more information, see the PlanetLab Everywhere workshop website.

ROADS '09
Submission Deadline June 15th

PlanetLab Europe researchers being encouraged to submit proposals to ROADS '09: 4th Workshop on Real Overlays and Distributed Systems.

Organizers welcome papers that explore the interaction between simulation, emulation, and more realistic deployment settings to better predict performance or architectural bottlenecks when scaling up a distributed service on experimental environments. These services might be existing, widely deployed systems, new research prototypes, or more permanent services. Submissions should address the technical and research challenges they present during the design, deployment, and evaluation phases.

ROADS '09 is co-located with the ACM Symposium on Operating Systems Principles, in Big Sky, Montana, October 14, 2009.

For more information, see the ROADS website.
